Why Rats?
Rats are like tiny, bark-less dogs that bond with their owner. They are one of the most intelligent of the fuzzy pets and they can learn their name, come when called, and can even learn tricks. You can have a relationship with rats that you can't have with other rodents as many of them are cuddly and nearly all of them enjoy human companion-ship. Rats are one of the few rodents that will happily ride around on your shoulder. They are curious and empathetic, meaning they know when other rats and their humans are sad and try to make them happy.

Do Rats Make Good Pets?

Here are some quotes from various rat owners, edited for grammar, spelling, and clarity.
“Rats go beyond making good pets, I believe they make great, loving, fun and loyal family members!”
“They are like the best mix of a cat and a dog with the same large personality in a tiny body.”
“Very loving, super intelligent, and they bond to you like glue on paper. Extremely funny, always doing something to make you laugh, always ready to cuddle with you, groom you, and give you kisses.”
“Rats are fun, affectionate and cheap to feed. Rats are really easy to please. They love attention like dogs but aren't needy, thus making great pets for busy city professionals.”

Are Rats for Me?

They can be, sure! Think about these things, though. Rats are probably a poor pet if you just want to look at them and not interact with them. Consider fish, reptiles, or maybe even a hamster. Amazingly, rats require regular housekeeping chores. Figure on at least once a week cleanup of the cage. Longer periods means more smell plus more danger to rat respiratory systems. Rat waste can have an offensive smell if you let it build up, unsurprisingly. So can cat waste, dog waste and any other animal waste if it's not taken care of. Rats chew things if they can get to them, so you'll want to take this into consideration. Really, when considering any type of pet, please do your research before becoming an owner and ask questions if you are unsure about it.
