We consider Alex to be special needs for a couple of reasons. One, he seems to be blind, or mostly blind, and his eyes are abnormal. Two, he has poor hind end motor control, and sort of drags his back legs sometimes. Now, he's a friendly enough boy with us, perhaps a little bit nervous still. With the other boys he switches from peacekeeper when others disagree to random instigator. If there's noise in the cage, he's probably the one stirring things up. Our vet is of the opinion that he could have a pituitary tumor, and I understand why he thinks this, but he really hasn't changed at all since we took him in. If it is a PT, his life expectancy is fairly low.
We've moved Alex into resident rat status due to his likely short time remaining. Actually, he has lived longer than we've expected! We will hang on to him for the rest of his days.
Alex certainly lived life much longer than we had hoped for! The decision was made to help him along due to his sudden weight decline, reduced ability to move, and declining interest in food. We'll miss you Alex!
